Anti-Semitism

The term anti-Semitism was coined by Wilhelm Marr in 1879. While both Arabs and Jews are Semites, the term anti-Semitism is specific to Jews - meaning Jew-hatred. Marr used the term to make Jew-hatred seem rational and scientifically-based. In 1879, Marr also founded the League of Anti-Semites which was an organization dedicated to combating the perceived threat of Jews and seeking the removal of Jews from Germany. Anti-semitism is broadly defined within three categories: religious (anti-Judaism), racial, and the new anti-Semitism. Religious anti-Semitism has taken many forms over the years including blood libels, host desecrations, Crusades, Passion Plays, and expulsions. Racial anti-Semitism takes the form of the belief that Jews are a separate-and inferior-race. The new anti-Semitism takes the form of the acceptance of ancient anti-Semitic beliefs mixed with anti-Zionism.1
